Reel Borders studies how borders are imagined through film

Academic article on reflexivity in participatory filmmaking research

Irene Gutiérrez recently published the academic article "Trapped in Ceuta: reflexive tactics and methods in Participatory Filmmaking among cross-border Women" as part of the special issue "Towards reflexivity in the study of mobility and diversity: Theories, positionality and the political economy of knowledge production", edited by Iva Dodevska and Maissam Nimer. The article explores a reflexive approach to participatory filmmaking in migration and border studies. Drawing on a three-month participatory filmmaking workshop and ethnographic research with 13 border-crossing women who have worked in domestic service in Ceuta for decades, the article argues that participatory filmmaking, through specific reflexive tactics and methods, has the potential to function as an essential site of decolonial action by reshaping discourses on migration, belonging and citizenship. More information on the article can be found here.
