Reel Borders studies how borders are imagined through film

April 21, 2021

Screening of Bab Sebta (2019, 19’) by Randa Maroufi and presentation of the project Reel Border at the Migrant Belongings conference

During the International Conference Migrant Belonging, organized by Connecting Europe ERC Project at Utrecht University in collaboration with the DMM section of  ECREA, the members of Reel Borders presented the project to a wide audience and participants of the conference. Prof. Kevin Smets highlighted the objectives and aims of this new research and the importance to bring films to the core of media and migration research about borders. For this special occasion, the members of the project, led by Irene Gutiérrez, had the privilege to share this new research experience with the filmmaker Randa Maroufi who presented her film Bab Sebta (2019, 19’).
Randa Maroufi was born in 1987 in Casablanca. She currently lives and works in Paris. She has a prolific film career due to her training in the National Institute of Fine Arts, Tetouan, Morocco (2010) and the School of Fine Arts, Angers, France (2013), as well as her diploma from Le Fresnoy – Studio National des Arts Contemporains, Tourcoing, France (2015). She has been Artist Member of Academy of France in Madrid at Casa de Velázquez in 2017 – 2018. She has also been part of different group exhibitions in New Museum, NY (2020); MA Museum, Quebec (2019) or Biennale de Dakar, Senegal (2018), among others. She has received many awards for her film Le Park (2015), and Bab Sebta (2019). Bab Sebta focuses on the parallel economy and the power struggles that occur in the door of Sebta (the Arabic name of Ceuta). The frontier, represented by a flat, offers a rigorous choreography of bodies, of individual and collective gestures, that shows different realities of  smugglers, customs officers,
and police and its parallel reality of trafficking, stunts and tricks, as well as their unspoken tragedies.

The session took place online at Zoom platform at 19:30h CET. The recording of the session is available online.
