CESSMIR Conference “Contemporary forms of racism and discrimination”

From 19-21 September Lennart attended the 2022 CESSMIR CONFERENCE on contemporary forms of racism and discrimination. There the presented the paper ‘False Moves: Border Games in Popular Visual Culture and the Deracialisation of Migration’. Here Lennart investigated the contemporary trend of simulating migrant experiences in media such as reality TV, VR, and documentary. While such representation is often created with good intentions, the paper argues that it can lead to a spectacularization and gamification of migrant-ness that runs the risk of being co-opted by border security institutions.

In the evening, Lennart hosted a Q&A with director An Van Dienderen on her film Prism (2021) in KASKcinema. Prism is a film essayistic triptych made by Rosine Mbakam, Eléonore Yameogo and An van Dienderen in which the racial biases of film technology are being scrutinised.
