Reel Borders studies how borders are imagined

Chapter on borderveillant spectatorship
The Reel Borders team is happy to contribute a chapter to the recently published volume “Creating Europe from the Margins: mobilities and racism in postcolonial Europe”, edited by Kristín Loftsdóttir, Brigitte Hipfl and Sandra Ponzanesi. Authored by Lennart Soberon and Kevin Smets, the chapter explores how reality TV can incorporate border securitization and migrant criminalization. Through an in-depth study of Channel 4’s mini-series “Smuggled” (2019) which focuses on the UK borders, the chapter argues that migration and border control are increasingly incorporated in popular media, acting as important sites of exclusionary discourses on citizenship. More information on the chapter can be found here.
