The editorial piece, co-written by Irene Gutiérrez and Connie Hodgkinson Lahiff, announces the special issue of the 2024 IMISCOE PhD network, titled "How to make research more engaged: positionality, inequalities and access". This initiative aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the practice and politics of engaged migration research. The special issue comprises thirteen blog posts written by migration scholars and practitioners from various fields, including law, sociology, politics, human geography, development, architecture, education, communication, language, social medicine, and community health. We delve into three research dilemmas - positionality, inequalities, and access - which are intertwined yet distinct ethical concerns within the field. Specifically, we explore the inter/transdisciplinary approach, the relationship between positionality and reflexivity, and the potential of participatory methods. Lastly, we emphasize that challenging positionality, inequalities, and access is crucial to promoting a compassionate practice in academia and beyond. You can read the blog piece here.
