One of the key issues raised during Reel Borders' research on
the Moroccan-Spanish border in Ceuta is the precarious situation of hundreds
of Moroccan women working irregularly for decades in the Spanish enclave. Our
participatory filmmaking workshop with 13 transborder women from Morocco
aimed to increase visibility and recognition of what is happening on the EU's
external borders, from the perspective of its inhabitants. As part of this
goal we presented three of the Reel Border short films at the European
Parliament in a discussion on labour, gender and mobility in the EU and its
external borders. The speakers included Kathleen Van Brempt and Thijs Reuten
(Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats), Damian Boeselager
(Greens/Free European Alliance), Alyssa Ahrabare (European Network of Migrant
Women), Abir Al-Sahlani (Renew Europe Group), and Grace Papa (EFFAT). Several of our participants were also supposed to join this event, but unfortunately they were not able to travel due to their restricted mobility opportunities. With their videos created during the participatory filmmaking workshop they shared some of their experiences with the politicians and experts, hoping that these give a human face and story to the policies in the EU. |
