Reel Borders studies how borders are imagined through film

November 1-10, 2021

Fieldwork

From 1-10 November the REEL BORDERS team was in Ireland and Northern Ireland where they met filmmakers, experts, archivists, film lovers, film forum organizers and participatory video creators. They were also able to enjoy many films as a part of the Belfast Film Festival. One of the recurring questions during this research visit was to what extent ‘border film’ is a solid category for a specific set of films and film practices. The team also talked extensively about complex processes of re-bordering and de-bordering in Irish history. While having learned a lot, the research continues in the coming months, as we will focus on topics such as film production, film archiving and community film forums. In Spring the team will spend several months of fieldwork in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
