Reel Borders studies how borders are imagined through film

July  5, 2022

Antwerp Summer University 2022. Migrants self-representation in Europe.

On 5 July 2022, Irene Gutiérrez gave a lecture at Antwerp Summer University 2022, “Europe: Diversity and Migration”. She talked about her approach to the Moroccan-Spanish border as a filmmaker in “Border Diaries” (2013) and “Connected Walls” (2015, co-directed with Youssef Drissi). She presented a video-essay about the absence of migrant voices in mainstream media and cinema, talked about the role of an autonomous archive made by a collective of migrants (2009-present) along the Moroccan-Spanish border, and of Participatory Filmmaking as a method to visualize migrant voices in public spheres. Here you can watch the 7’ video screened during the session.
