IMISCOE 2022 annual conference. Methodological and ethical challenges in doing Participatory Filmmaking among migrants

On 29-30 July 2022, Irene Gutiérrez participated in the IMISCOE 2022 annual conference as part of the panel “Challenging the written paradigm: Visual methods as an epistemological tool for migration research“ along with Alseny Diallo, Caroline Lenette (University of New South Wales), Mariia Shaidrova (University of Tilburg), Elsa Gomis (Maison Française of Oxford), and  Gintarė Kudžmaitė (Tampere University).

Irene’s presentation shed light on some ethical and methodological challenges in doing Participatory Filmmaking among migrants in borderlands. Combining self-representational filmmaking and autonomous archivism, Irene underlined how this set of methods could be genuinely participatory while procuring a safe space for co-creating situated knowledge about border-crossing and everyday bordering practices. Here you can watch the 4’ video recorded by Alseny Diallo about his experience in two Participatory Filmmaking workshops.
