Since last November, Reel Borders has held various workshops based on theoretical, methodological and ethical aspects involving its team members working with experts on the different sub-studies of the project.

The first workshop, 'Reality, fiction and film', was held on November 22nd, 2021, was attended by prof. Mario Slugan (Queen Mary University of London), prof. Nishat Awan (University of Sheffield) and prof. Rachel Johnson (University of Leeds). This workshop aimed to debate the connected spaces and contested arenas of border imaginaries by looking at representation and spectator engagement, distribution and exhibition, lived experience and belonging.

The workshop 'Studying the social through the visual' was held on March 3rd, 2022, with the participation of prof. Ilse Derluyn (Ghent University), prof. Hannah Jones (University of Warwick) and prof. Koen Leurs (Utrecht University). The speakers reflected together with our team members on the importance of the visual in social analysis and its ethical implications in border research. Through the notion of "subjugated knowledge", the team discussed the challenges of the different border zones of the project.

Finally, the last workshop was held on March 28th, 2022. Prof. Paolo Favero (University of Antwerp), prof. Sue Sudbury (Bournemouth University), prof. İlke Şanlıer Yüksel and prof. Aydın Çam (Çukurova University) were invited to discuss the use of participatory filmmaking as research method in borderlands to contribute to the concept of 'border cinema' from a vernacular perspective.
