Reel Borders studies how borders are imagined through film

July  5-8, 2022

HoMER Network History of Moviegoing, Exhibition and Reception. Emotions as borderwork: everyday cinematic experiences on the Irish border

On 5-8 July 2022, Silvia Almenara-Niebla and Kevin Smets participated in the HoMER 2022 annual conference, hosted by the Sapienza University of Rome and the UK/AHRC funded European Cinema Audiences project (ECA).

Their presentation "Emotions as Borderwork: Everyday cinematic experiences on the Irish Border" shed light on how people interact with film to create meanings towards their daily lives at the Irish border. Combining in-depth interviews and  cineforum sessions, Silvia and Kevin outline how the emotions elicited by film allow us to understand the situated meaning of the border in the everyday experiences of the people who inhabit it.
